Avani Lekhara Makes History at Paris Paralympics 2024

On the second day of the Paris Paralympics 2024, Indian shooter Avani Lekhara etched her name in history by clinching her second consecutive gold medal in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 event. This remarkable achievement makes her the first Indian to win gold medals in back-to-back Paralympic Games.

Avani's triumphant performance came as she scored an impressive 249.7, surpassing her previous Paralympic record of 249.6 set in Tokyo 2020. Her victory was hard-earned, narrowly edging out Korea’s Lee Yunri, who scored 246.8 to take the silver. This marks India’s first-ever double podium finish in the same event at the Paralympics, with Mona Agarwal securing bronze with a score of 228.7.

This gold medal is particularly significant as Avani overcame considerable health challenges, including a gallbladder surgery earlier in the year that required a break from training. Her unwavering determination and rigorous preparation at the Karni Singh shooting ranges enabled her to come back stronger.

In her post-victory remarks, Avani expressed her pride and focus: “It was a very close final. I was concentrating on my thought process rather than the result. I am thrilled that the Indian national anthem was played first in the arena. I have two more matches ahead, and I am committed to winning more medals for my country.”

Avani’s journey began at the age of 11 following a life-changing car accident that left her paralyzed from the waist down. Competing in the SH1 category, which accommodates athletes with various impairments, she showcased extraordinary composure and skill. Her final shot of 10.5 proved decisive, especially after Lee Yunri’s last shot fell short.

Adding to India’s success on this historic day, Manish Narwal won a silver medal in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 event, and sprinter Preethi Pal earned a bronze in the Women’s 100m T35 event, setting a personal best with a time of 14.21 seconds. Preethi’s achievement is notable as she secured India’s first athletics medal in Paralympic track history.

India’s impressive performance on Day 2 positioned them 10th in the overall standings, surpassing notable competitors like Japan and Korea.

Avani Lekhara's Historic Feat: A New Chapter in Paralympic Glory

Avani Lekhara’s gold medal at Paris 2024 not only reaffirms her status as a top para-shooter but also highlights her role as a trailblazer in Indian sports. Her success has resonated widely, with Bollywood celebrities and sports enthusiasts celebrating her groundbreaking achievements.
